Se ha dado a conocer la primera prótesis de tobillo-pie con propulsión, un avance importante para las personas que sufrieron la amputación de la parte inferior de una pierna.
La prótesis, diferente a cualquier otra, propulsa a los usuarios usando un motor eléctrico y resortes similares a tendones. El dispositivo prototipo reduce la fatiga, mejora el equilibrio, y proporciona a los usuarios un modo de andar más fluido y verdaderamente natural. La meta es combinar estas técnicas complementarias para crear extremidades "biohíbridas" compuestas de materiales biológicos y artificiales, una combinación de hombre y máquina.


Un objetivo importante del centro es desarrollar extremidades artificiales que funcionen como las biológicas. Hugh Herr y su equipo están alcanzando esta meta. Su nuevo dispositivo es un gran paso para las personas con amputación.
